Starring: Iko Uwais, Tony Jaa, Tiger Chen, Michael Jai White, Scott Adkins & Michael Bisping . . An excellent martial arts action flick, Triple Threat comes alive with its style and incredibly talented cast. Getting all of these full fledged action stars together came out well worth the effort. The plot wastes no time getting into motion and by the first fight scene with Iko Uwais and Tony Jaa you know exactly what you’re in for with the rest of the film. Throughout the rest, it’s a fairly straightforward chase where the bad guys have to find the good guys for various reasons. There’s a little double-cross thrown in for good measure but it’s set up from the beginning so it’s clear what’s going to happen. They’re going to fight. And when they do it’s amazing. The main trio, the titular “triple threat” are pretty much perfect. There are some smaller scenes which get into their characters in subtle moments which was an excellent way to give them more depth. Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais and Tiger Chen are exactly the fantastic trio you expect, and fortunately for the audience they are pitted against Michael Jai White, Scott Adkins and Michael Bisping. All of these performers add their own style to the fight scenes and they play off each other very well. Splitting the stars up into the “good” and “bad” sides was a smart decision. So that they all get to carry the film together. The directing and editing of the action scenes is also great. Letting the audience actually see the great choreography, which is something I wish big Hollywood would pay more attention to. The final climactic battle is some of the best fight choreography I’ve seen in a while. The only parts that were a bit disappointing in this film had more to do with budget constraints, like cgi blood splatter. But for its restrictions, Triple Threat still absolutely shines. It’s a fantastic small scale martial arts action movie that’s absolutely worth the 90 minute runtime. It definitely deserves some more attention so check it out on Netflix now!
